How we check this glossary

Who writes the definitions, which sources we use, how often we re-check them and how listing figures are counted.

01

Who writes and checks terms

The Property Centre content team writes and checks every definition, in plain English and in our own words. Each term page shows the date it was last checked.

02

The two-source rule

Every legal, tax or fee claim is checked against at least two independent, reputable sources, such as a law, a government or regulator website, a court judgment or a professional body. A claim only one source supports is left out. We never rely on forums, social media, pages selling a product or service, or other property portals.

When reputable sources disagree, we don't pick one. We show each position, with its source and date, under “Sources differ”.

Bills and proposals are labelled “Proposed, not yet law” until they become law.

03

How often we re-check

Type of term Re-checked
Legal, fee and proposed-law terms Every 90 days
Other terms Every year

A term is also re-checked when one of its figures is more than a year old, or when someone reports a problem with it. If we learn that a law or fee has changed between checks, we update the page sooner.

04

How listing figures are counted

Listing figures on term pages come from Property Centre listing data. Each month we count the listings that were live on the last night of the month, and look for the term, or one of its other names, in the listing description.

Each listing counts once, however many times it mentions the term. We only publish a figure when at least 30 listings are counted, and we don't compare one month with the last.

October 2026 covers 11–31 October, because we started counting on 11 October. From November 2026, each month covers the whole month.

05

How to report an error

Use “Something wrong or out of date?” at the bottom of any term page. Tell us what's wrong and, if you'd like a reply, leave your email. We read every report and re-check the term.
